I. Read the article provided, "The Coming Wolf."

II. The re-introduction of predators such as the grizzly bear and wolf are very controversial as evidenced by the symbol on the state flag, and a group called "Grizzlies Come Back!" has lobbied for re-introduction of the species into California wilderness. Using the previous activity's numbers for the amount of space needed for the wolf and one of more wilderness areas which would be appropriate for its re-introduction, determine how the following interest groups would react to bringing back the wolf listing the general arguments both for and against re-introduction. Explain the arguments and different citizen points-of-view for the rest of the class.

Citizen Representatives

  • Local PTA
  • Local Chamber of Commerce
  • County Commissioners
  • Area Representative (Republican)
  • Area Senator (Cemocrat)
  • State Governor (Republican) Area
  • Environmental Group
  • Area Multiple Use Advocacy Group
  • Sierra Club Wise Use (National Multiple Use Advocacy Group)
  • President of the United States (Democrat)

III. Once you have weighed the different points-of-view expressed here, as the Wilderness Management Team, you must decide whether or not to re-introduce the wolf. Explain your decision to the class and the reasoning behind it.
