We’re now at May Lake and the mountains that seemed so far away this morning are towering above me. The royal blue lake with the mountains around it, guarding it like the jewel it is. I really hope there aren’t any clouds tonight because I want to look up and see a blanket of stars above my head, like a blanket of jewels shining down on the jewel I’m in.

I would love to work at a place like this. At night the stars looked like a mirror little candles gleaming in the sky. And every meal left you feeling as though you had just ate a thanksgiving meal. In the mornings of our backpacking trips the air was cool and breezy as if off the ocean. And at times my breath could be seen as if it were smoke from a campfire. The first morning the sky was a brilliant blue. It looked as if an artist had gone up there during the night painted the sky this beautiful shade of blue.

The night has turned. The temp is about a comfortable 65-70 degrees. The sky has turned into a gorgeous stark blue starry sky. The layers of the sky have broken out not only in one layer or two but four or five. It’s strikingly beautiful and there are lights here but the sky is truly endless. I just want to fall into the endless abyss of sky!

Megan

As I sit here in the slowly dying light, I see the cool purple sky to my right & the thin strip of orange above the horizon to my left. The waxing moon slowly marches through the sky, a beacon of light through the night. One big cloud of fog descends on the trees in front of me, creating an eerie effect. I can hear the rush of the river to my right & the sound of some groupmates playing cards in a tent in front. From the forest at my back I hear only a mysterious silence. I resist the urge to turn & look at what my be lurking there, preferring for the moment to be blissfully unaware of the painful realities of the wilderness.
