Environmental
Science Academy

From June 12-18, WildLink took on an exciting new collaborative project in the Environmental Science Academy. For this special expedition, we joined forces with UC Merced, the Yosemite Institute, and Yosemite National Park. This team led a group of students from the Merced Union High School District on an adventure like no other WildLink expedition before.

Expedition VII

Ten students from Harbor City's Boys and Girls Club joined us for our final expedition of the summer, one that took us to the long-anticipated Grand Canyon of the Tuolomne. Mileage was long, elevation gain large, waterfalls stunning and the students were strong and positive.

Highlights of the trip were the sightings of a rattlesnake, marmots, the river singing us to sleep at night, a full moon lighting our evenings, and a few very bold and curious black bears!

WildLink Celebrates Wilderness with the Fresno Grizzlies

This summer WildLink will be joining forces with the Central California Consortium in a multi-cultural celebration of wilderness. The celebration, held in conjunction with the 40th Anniversary celebration of the Wilderness Act, is part of Grizzly Stadium’s annual Great Outdoors event. This event allows underserved youth and family members from the Fresno Area to spend an afternoon and an evening celebrating Wilderness at the Fresno Grizzly stadium.

The participating 550 families will be given tickets to attend a Fresno Grizzly baseball game on Saturday night, June 26, 2004. At the stadium they will join up to 13,000 other fans for an all-American night of baseball. After the game, the fans can all participate in an Education Fair with exhibits and demos highlighting the National Wilderness Preservation System, its values and its relevance to their lives. These will include rock climbing, fishing, backpacking, and fire awareness and safety.

WildLink will provide a portable climbing wall, which will be fully staffed by experienced climbers and local Yosemite climbing celebrities. Yosemite Fitness, a Fresno climbing gym, will provide free climbing passes that will be given away through a drawing to provide students with the opportunity to pursue this sport in their home community. One of the evening programs for the 150 students who will be camping overnight in the stadium will feature Petit Pinson, a local teacher, who climbed Mt. Everest on a special expedition broadcast on the Global Extremes TV show on ABC and the Outdoor Living Network.

A special thanks goes out to the members of WildLink Expedition VII, who are helping out at the event by staffing the wilderness education booth.

The wilderness activities will be available to anyone attending the game, so if there are any interested alumni out there not already involved with the Great Outdoors, come by and see us!
