Who?
On
October 28, 2001, 11 students from Kingsburg, Reseda,
and Turlock High Schools arrived in Curry Village
prepared and excited for the first WildLink Expedition
of the year. EXPEDITION I students came to Yosemite
full of expectation--of new friendships, wilderness challenges,
and even black bears!
EXPEDITION
I stayed in Yosemite from October 28 to November 2,
2001. With their unique combination of energy, motivation,
and humor, these students left behind their fear of the
unfamiliar and gained a new appreciation for what they
never knew they had! Expedition I stayed in Curry Village
for two nights, embarking on their 4 day, 3 night backpacking
trip in Hetch Hetchy in the midst of a winter storm. Despite
the weather, the group hiked 6 miles to Rancheria Falls,
and spent the next two days camping amidst sunshine, rainbows
and waterfalls. While in Yosemite they:
- met
new people from diverse backgrounds and different high
schools
- explored
wilderness and diversity with Interpretive Park Ranger
Shelton Johnson
- collected
hydrology data for the GLOBE program at Rancheria Creek
- conducted
stream macroinvertebrate and habitat surveys, providing
data for the Resource Management Division of Yosemite
National Park
- learned
how to backpack using Leave No Trace principles
