Who?
On
December 2, 2001, 10 students from Berkeley High
School arrived in Curry Village in the midst of snow,
ice, and freezing temperatures. These students endured
and appreciated Yosemite's wilderness through the fog
of a clearing storm, the warmth of a historic cabin, and
the encouragement of their peers.
EXPEDITION
II ran from December 2 to 8, 2001. Students stayed
in in Curry village for two nights before their 4 day,
3 night backpacking trip in the Merced Grove. New to snow,
and new to cross-country skiing as well as snowshoeing,
this group hiked 1.5 miles to the Merced Grove Cabin,
emerging 3 days later with a newfound maturity and a fuller
knowledge of all that they are capable of doing. While
in Yosemite they:
- explored
wilderness and diversity with Interpretive Park Ranger
Shelton
Johnson
- stayed
two nights at the Merced Grove cabin; they also built
a snow cave and set up tents for a night under the stars!
- collected
hydrology data on Moss Creek for the GLOBE program at
two sites: Twin Bridges and near the Merced Grove Cabin
- were
subjects of extensive filming for a Yosemite National
Park Productions project documenting the Merced Grove
Cabin and other historic cabins in the park
- learned
how to backpack using Leave No Trace principles
