This very
special expedition was led by our WildLink partners from the
Sequoia Field Institute and CORE team from Sequoia Field Guides.
Ten students and two chaperones from Reedley High School's Generation
Green Program joined John, Miles and Stephanie for a fantastic
four day journey into Sequoia National Park.
The spring
weather smiled upon the group, where they spent their first
day at the Beetle Rock Education Center, studying sequoia ecology,
wilderness, and visiting the Air Quality Monitoring Station
based there. Among the day's adventures was chasing an inquisitive
bear from a nearby dumpster!
Their second
day 5 miles to Clover Creek, where they braved a stream crossing,
and studied LNT and tree identification. Some deer were also
spotted there.
The third
day carried them 1.7 miles to their final destination of Twin
Lakes, where they were welcomed by marmots and squirrels. There
they spent a full day of field journalling, map skills, wilderness
appreciation and aquatic entymology
This was
an excellent group. They learned a lot about the Park Service,
Wilderness, local ecology, hiking/wilderness skills, and safety.
High
points were nights full of stars, lots of wildlife sightings,
and the peace and quiet of wilderness.
